Theme
At Boutcher, we teach History and Geography through a ‘theme’ each term. We ensure coverage of the EYFS curriculum through to Key Stage One and Key Stage Two curriculum where children build on their subject knowledge and skills in these areas of learning. Our history and geography learning embed the knowledge required as well as making cross-curricular links and building on previous learning.
History
Our teaching enables children to gain knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past as well as the past of the wider world. We want our children to be curious and inspire them to know more about the past. History teaching enables our children to look at timelines to gain a sense of chronology as well as using evidence, a range of sources as well as taking part in workshops and trips to support the teaching of a particular topic
Geography
The children at Boutcher learn about the world around them in a geographical sense by equipping them with the knowledge and skills that will be useful in their everyday lives and help them build a sense of curiosity and fascination about the world around them. Geography teaching gives children knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments as well as looking at the physical and human world. We want our children to develop their understanding of the world and develop a greater sense of local and global issues and sustainability. We want children to maximise opportunities to explore their local area as well as going on trips to support their learning.
